Guide Review - Acer Aspire 6920-6422 Thin and Light Notebook

5/30/08 - The Aspire 6920 chassis really stretches the definition of thin and light laptops. The large 16-inch screen means that this system really has more in common with desktop replacements than most thin and light notebooks. Still, Acer offers a larger 8920 notebook design to compete with desktop replacements.

In terms of performance, the 6920-6422 is certainly one of the more powerful systems available on the market. It uses the new Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 dual core mobile processor that with its high clock speed and cache levels gives it near desktop performance. Acer also includes 4GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory that let's it run through applications in Vista without any problems.

The Aspire 6920-6422 sets itself apart from the other 6920 models because it comes equipped with a Blu-ray compatible drive. This combined with the 16-inch display that features a 1920x1080 resolution means that this is a true high definition mobile movie platform. Of course, the 16-inch screen is fairly small for such a high resolution but one can connect the PC to an external HDTV using the HDMI interface.

Speaking of graphics, the Aspire 6920-6422 uses a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS graphics processor along with 512MB of memory. This provides it with solid overall performance for 3D applications. It does have some trouble running applications at the full screen resolution but is still capable of strong 3D performance.

The overall cost of the Aspire 6920-6422 puts it on the higher end of the thin and light notebook lineup. This cost is easily offset by the various features included in the system, but there are less expensive and smaller notebook alternatives.
